Start of instructions for installing AWE
----------------------------------------

1) Create a directory where AWE will be installed.
The complete path to this directory will be called <YOUR_AWEHOMEPATH_HERE>
   in the following steps.

2) Get the Astro-Wise setup script

      wget -N http://astro-wise.org/awesoft/awesetup

   Make it executable by doing

      chmod +x awesetup

Start the installation script that you've just downloaded by doing

      ./awesetup awehome=<YOUR_AWEHOMEPATH_HERE> awetarget=common

PROBLEMS
--------
Q: set_pre_input_hook() is missing from the readline module causing the
   following exception

   Traceback (most recent call last):
File "???.py", line ???, in <module>
       readline.set_pre_input_hook(sys.stdout)
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'set_pre_input_hook'

A: Add the following line to Modules/readline.c

   #define HAVE_RL_PRE_INPUT_HOOK 1

Q: When I run ./configure in step 1 I get:

   checking MACHDEP... linux2
   checking EXTRAPLATDIR...
   checking for --without-gcc... no
   checking for gcc... g++
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

However, when I remove the LIB=-ltermcap setting it works.

A: If you are running on an ubuntu based system, you should install the
   libncurses5-dev package. E.g. by doing
   sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev
For OpenSuSE 11.0 you may need to place a symbolic link to the libtermcap.so
   library in /usr/lib.

Q: When I run awe, it looks like a normal Python prompt (">>> ").

A: This should not be the case, you need to get this prompt: "awe> ". One
reason can be (in the case of OpenSuSE 11.0 and OpenSuSE 11.1) that the
PYTHONSTARTUP environment variable already exists. Change sitecustomize.py
so that it doesn't use the system startup file.

Q: When I run awe, it fails to import 'zlib'.

A: You should install zlib development files before running the script.
   E.g. on Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install zlib1g-dev

Q: When I run awe, it fails to import 'bz2'.

A: You should install bz2 development files before running the script.
   E.g. on Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install libbz2-dev

Q: When I run awe, it fails to import 'readline'.

A: You should install readline development files before running the script.
   E.g. on Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install libreadline5-dev

Q: When I run awe, it fails to import 'pylab'.

A: You should install the FreeType 2 font engine and PNG development files
   before running the script.
   E.g. on Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install libfreetype6-dev libpng12-dev

Q: When I run awe, it fails to import 'numpy'.

A: numpy might fail to compile when $CFLAGS or $LDFLAGS is set, unset
   these variables before running awesetup.
   See http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.python.scientific.user/10391

Q: When I run awe, it says:

   | You are running the AWBASE version
   Importing Astro-WISE packages. Please wait...
   undefined@undefined Password:

   what is the password?

A: Follow the 'Getting Started HOW-TO' to create your Environment.cfg at
   http://www.astro-wise.org/portal/howtos/man_howto_start/man_howto_start.shtml

Q: When I run awe, it says:

   - database : undefined

A: Manually enter your database information in ~/.awe/Environment.cfg, e.g:

   database_name : db.astro.rug.astro-wise.org
   database_engine : oracle_10g
   database_api : cx_Oracle
